Another quickie

Well the week started off a pretty good one. Arwen was eating her solid foods quite well, enjoying it even and generally happy. These past two days however… sheesh.

This whole teething bit has gone far enough. I wish the teeth would just come in and give the kid a break. She’s been restless and is prone to spontaneous bouts of crying that last upwards of 10 minutes.

This evening I saw something of a first in my eyes. We were sitting down to a fast food dinner, Arwen was with us. Reluctantly she was eating until she saw me unwrap my first item of food. Reaching for the wrapper she started to get a little fussy. I gave her the wrapper and she was quite pleased with it until I saw that it was getting soggy and took it away. Immediately there were intense cries of disappointment, reaching with all her might from the high chair to try to get back this treasure I so unfairly took away.

Now, there is nothing remarkable about this behaviour. Every kid does it, and we’ve noted here before that she has begun to demand things she wants. This is the first time the I’ve ever seen her understand that I was taking something away, and that by some twist of logic I was taking something away that belonged to her. I looked at this event with amusement and a little dread. It’s the beginning of the inherit territoriality found in all of us.
