Unwelcomed Events

Well today was rather eventful. Eventful in the sort of way that makes one curse the inefficiency of design and technology.

spyMommy had a bit of an episode today on the way to work. A sudden spell of lightheadedness, nausea and sweats caused her to pull over to the side of the road. Immediately she called me and I insisted she went to the doctor’s office which was just a couple streets over. Instead she pulled herself together and made it to work where she then called the doctor. She was then instructed to go to the hospital to be evaluated. This is, of course, not the sort of advice one wants to hear. Hysterical, she made her way out of work and back towards home to pick me up. There was no way I was going to let her do this on her own.

Not knowing where at the hospital to go we went to the emergency room where we were immediately intercepted by a security guard who instructed us to go to the labor and delivery wing of the hospital. I’m sure my expression reflected my thoughts at the moment, “Who are you, a security guard, to tell us where to go when you have no idea what the problem is.”  (please keep in mind that I had only just started to fall asleep when she called me. My temper was not where it should’ve been)
We made our way over to the opposite side of the campus where we had to park near the top of the parking garage. A few separate elevator rides later we arrived where we needed to be. Right away we were sent to one of the delivery rooms. Talk about bad omens. Luckily though, it simply meant that they weren’t busy at the time. spyMommy got her gown on and settled into the bed and we waited.

Not to long after getting settled in the nurse came in to the room and started taking information.
“What was the point of pre-registering at a hospital if you had to register every time you went?”, I thought to myself. After spyMommy got the fetal monitors on, things became a bit blurry for me. I was starting to fall asleep. Ever since taking on a third shift position I’ve found that I can fall asleep just about anywhere regardless of comfort, temperature or noise. For the better part of the day I was in and out of consciousness waking up when someone came into the room.

Finally a midwife that works for spyMommy’s doctor arrived and suggested some possible causes for the symptoms as none of the tests showed anything out of the ordinary. One such suggestion was sinus drainage into the ear. I’ve heard of this, it made partial sense but to me it didn’t explain everything. To our amazement they didn’t have one of those pokey things they stick in your ear. An “odoscope” I think they called it.
“This is a hospital, right? They don’t have a simple instrument that is found in every family practice office?”, I thought to myself as the midwife explained that without this we can’t completely rule this out. She then suggested a sudden spike or drop in blood sugar and/or pressure. This made more sense to me, but as I stated above, none of the tests suggested this was the case either. This wasn’t all that surprising though. The human body has got counter-measures put in place to correct sudden problems.

With what they can call a clean bill of health for mother and child spyMommy was released. She’s now at home resting and feeling better. This was a scare that neither of us needed. By divinity or the randomness of the universe we seem to still be blessed with a healthy child to be, and despite the shortcomings of people and design I am quite happy this is so.
